THE MIRACLE JOURNEY
You
may never guess when you meet the vibrantly healthy woman that she is a living miracle. At the age of
22, Jennifer Hughes had no mental response and a prognosis that she would never be able to walk again - (let alone
do something as strenuous as massage therapy she performs with such vigor today). Hughes journey to her present business, Family Therapeutic Massage, began very early in
her life. She doesn’t remember how old she was at the time, but says that somehow she learned that she had incredibly
strong hands and grew up always recognizing her massage abilities. In the early eighties, while living in California, she became acquainted
with a professional massage therapist who, when he found out that she’d always considered herself talented in therapeutic
massage, introduced her to the proper techniques used in therapeutic body massage. After a year of practicing under his
guidance, she returned “home” to Mississippi, never dreaming that she would ever use those skills; massage was
just something that she considered as a career. In March, 1985, Jennifer had a traumatic car accident resulting
in two broken legs (each leg had multiple breaks), crushed lungs, and head injuries with two hematomas
on her brain and extreme blood loss. One knee was so badly damaged that amputation was recommended. Jennifer
was in a coma for five weeks, not expected to live because of the severe brain damage and multiple body injuries. After being in a coma for five weeks she had mentally regressed to her childhood
and did not speak. She whined like a baby. Released from the hospital, Hughes sat in her wheelchair. Family
members talked to her constantly but she did not appear to hear them or respond in any way. It was a very slow healing
process. Then, one day, one of her sisters asked her a question and Jennifer answered it! She was finally on
her way to recovery for the next several months. Later, a man whom Jennifer had briefly
met a couple of years earlier had suffered a major stroke. He had been told that he would never walk again and lost
the use of his left arm. This was a very unhappy man. He remembered meeting Hughes who also wasn’t supposed
to be walking, but to his surprise, was walking. Impressed by her recovery, he asked her to assist him with
his recovery. She agreed. His rehabilitation included extensive physical therapy treatments and therapeutic massage
twice a day, seven days a week. Slowly but surely, over time, his strength built up, the knots were worked out of his
body, and he was out of his wheel chair and on his feet. It was then that Jennifer Hughes realized that God had
answered her prayers about finding work. She realized that massage was the calling she had searched for since her car accident. After
all, hadn’t she always been a massage therapist?!! That revelation came in January
of 1989, and Jennifer Hughes has been helping people with her massage therapy techniques ever since. She took a course
in anatomy and physiology and studied hard in preparation for her entrance exam for the American Massage Therapy Association
(AMTA). She passed her exam and opened Family Therapeutic Massage. On the wall is a framed arrangement of the metal
pins which at one time held her legs together. In November, 1993, Jennifer passed the national certification boards for
therapeutic massage and bodywork. The
name for the business was originally chosen because people of all ages can benefit from massage therapy. But
some things won’t change, the framed pin arrangement on her office wall, serves as a reminder of Jennifer’s miracle
journey that helped set the way to where she is today... A caring and talented Massage Therapist!
